The Rise of Veganism
Up until just a few years ago Veganism was believed to belong to a niche group of people who were viewed by non-vegans as tree-huggers, thin, weak-bodied hippies who lived on a diet of “rabbit food”. However, that is no longer the case as veganism is growing massively around the world and has catapulted into the mainstream in the past 18 months.
Vegan Bodybuilders & Athletes
Vegan bodybuilders, runners and athletes such as Patrik Baboumian, Barny du Plessis, Josie du Plessis, Fiona Oakes, Torre Washington, Robert Cheeke, Mac Danzig, David Haye and Venus & Serena Williams all prove that “no meat athletes” are on the rise and dispelling that longstanding myth that we need animal protein to build muscle – we don’t! I even personally went on a mission myself to prove this point. I quickly built a lot of muscle on a healthy wholefoods plant based diet by lifting heavy weights at my local gym! From there I went on to design fitness gear now selling on here Bohemian Hippy to promote the power of veganism in our gyms.
Make That Change…
In a recent survey by comaparethemarket.com it showed that in the UK since 2016 there has been a significant spike in the amount of people switching to a compassionate vegan lifestyle, with more than 3.5 million people identifying as vegans. This is now more than 7% of the British population who have chosen to leave animal products, not only out their diets, but out their lifestyle too. They have come to realise that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment or exploit or abuse in any way. We do not need to use animals in any shape or form in our lives. Not only can we live without eating them, but can thrive on a healthy plant based diet and reverse diseases like diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. There are many ways to embrace vegan living.
The Rise of Activism
Attending Vegan Camp-Out last July really showed the impact veganism is having in the UK. Around 2700 people attended the event in Nottingham’s National Water Sports Centre in 2017. They hosted an array of global vegan/animal rights activists/speakers including James Aspey, Earthling Ed, Joey Carbstrong, Patrik Baboumian and Fiona Oakes. Last year was such a huge success that they have moved venue to Newark Showground for the 2018 festival to accommodate up to 5000 festival goers. The event is the world’s largest vegan camping festival and will take place between August 17th – 19th – there are still a few tickets available – click here to purchase; but hurry, they are almost sold out. Just this week Vegr launched an online campaign to show our love for animals as #TheNewNormal by bringing compassion and veganism into the mainstream. They hope the hash tag will do for animal rights what #MeToo did to raise awareness of sexual harassment.
Jump On-board The Vegan Train
All the big corporate companies are also getting on-board the vegan train with an ever-growing availability of vegan options in every type of business we can think of – manufacturers of food, drink, alcohol, cleaning & toiletry products are adding vegan options to their range. Supermarkets are stocking more and more vegan products every day, coffee shops, train operators, airlines, restaurants and hotels around the world are now offering vegan options. And it doesn’t stop there, car manufacturers are doing it, clothing & footwear companies, hairdressers, tattoo artists, beauticians and so the list goes on. Everywhere we look now we are seeing more and more vegan friendly and vegan businesses popping up.
The Cosy Vegan B&B
One particular business we recently paid a visit to is the Cosy Vegan B&B in Dunfermline in Scotland. The owners are both vegan, and Frannie is also involved in rescuing hens.
They opened their doors to the public in August 2017, and were one of the first fully vegan B&B’s in Scotland. Before even entering the house, they start a great job of planting great little vegan seeds to passers-by – they have green signage outside the front door of their cosy little home confirming they are a Vegan B&B. Making everyone who passes their door think consciously or subconsciously about veganism!
When you arrive inside you will be given a lovely little tour of the guest areas. Everywhere you look there is vegan information, reminders and the most beautiful animal pictures adorn their walls. Even their cutlery has special little vegan messages engraved on it and was made beautifully by Hepzibah Pink.
The hosts are warm, very friendly and knowledgeable of the area. The area is an ideal location for Dunfermline, Fife, Glasgow and Edinburgh, and is only 20 minutes away from Edinburgh International Airport.
They really have thought of everything any guest could wish for in their rooms. A mini fridge filled with plant-based milks, juice, yogurts and vegan cakes. There is a microwave, toaster and kettle with a great range of teas and fair trade filter coffee available (also instant coffee if you’d prefer). There’s a bowl of beautiful fruits available, and a choice of cereals. There are bowls, cups, glasses and that totally stunning vegan cutlery. There is also a good sized flat screen TV with Sky channels available, and the option to record. They even provide beautiful white bath robes, flip flops for the shower, a pile of clean fresh fluffy towels and flannel, a lavender mist for your pillow to help you sleep, and also a hairdryer. There’s a bookcase full of books and games so you wouldn’t be stuck for something to do. If it’s too warm, there’s a fan available, and if it’s too cold there is a fire and a fluffy covered hot water bottle. There is also a toilet and wash hand basin in the room, along with FREE wifi. Just outside the room there’s an iron-board and iron available and a great display of vegan flyers, business cards and magazines.
The breakfasts are a true vegan delight with a great variety of options. You can go for a full cooked vegan breakfast, porridge, healthy whole foods option, cereal, or simply toast with vegan spreads – the choice is yours.
Everything they do proves that The Cosy Vegan B&B are in this to really promote veganism!
Our Four-Legged Friends
The absolute highlight for many animal lovers will be Sandy!
Sandy is a truly adorable dog who will be your friend for the entirety of your stay if you’re looking for some canine company! He’s a young boy and is half Labrador/half Staffie. He is an extremely handsome young lad and appears to be laughing and smiling most of the time with those typical Staffie smiles; this portrays his character well as he is an extremely friendly and happy dog. Don’t worry though, if you’re not a doggy person you won’t really see him, but for me it was one of the real highlights of my visit – it was love at first sight!
If you have a companion doggy at home and you would like to him/her along to the B&B with you, that’s fine too – and don’t worry, if your fur baby is not good with other dogs, the hosts can keep Sandy well out the way if need be.
It’s also very handy that there is a village co-op just a few minutes away.
The co-op is renowned for selling lots of great vegan friendly products, and their own brand alcohol is clearly labelled for vegans. The hosts make you welcome to take in your own food and drink if you wish – you can enjoy this in your room or relaxing in the garden.
