Vegan News UK: Plant Based Heaven @ Tomillo

On the banks of Glasgow’s Forth & Clyde Canal overlooking the city’s west end Tomillo shines its beacon of plant based perfection! Whether you are vegan or non-vegan, living in Scotland or visiting, eating in Tomillo is an absolute must for any food lover. 

Their food and its presentation gives all the feel of a top high class restaurant, and the idyllic location and setting is just as perfect and breathtakingly stunning as the food.

Tomillo is a 100% vegan venture and operates only in the evening from the premises of Ocho at Speirs Wharf in Glasgow – so don’t turn up during the day at Ocho looking for this menu as it won’t be there.

The Tomillo journey all began with chef Mark and entrepreneur Natasha working together from early 2017. Natasha and Mark have always got on very well, with him as a fantastic chef and her doing the admin/marketing/ business side of the business, it made for the perfect business partnership.

In the summer of 2017 the pair decided to put on a “Vegan Tasting Menu” called VeGin; this comprised of gin pairing and a 4 course vegan tasting menu. The night was hugely popular and so they decided to run a few more, all of which were a resounding success.  After they had casually run around 5 of these events, they pair decided to formalise it and they started Tomillo. 

Their initial idea was to have Tomillo as a delivery service, but after the first month or so the demand for delivery dwindled and they had more and more people turning up on their doorstep wanting to sit in. It’s not surprising really that this happened as Ocho is located in such a beautiful setting so it’s more than understandable that people would want to sit in to eat at this location as opposed to opting for a home delivery.

Mark & Natasha decided to go for it and they opened the doors of Ocho as Tomillo and they have operated on most Thursday/Friday/Saturday evenings since March 2018.

Glasgow has a vibrant vegan scene and so the city embraced Tomillo with open arms.  In their short time being open already they have had some amazing events and also great opportunities to cater for externally. They have just passed the 12 month mark which is so exciting for Mark & Natasha and of course for Glasgow.  In that 12 months they even had a visit from famous vegan chef Gaz Oakley who joined them for a bite to eat – that is testament to the food!

This vegan pair have worked closely together for over a year and they haven’t had any fall outs…(yet) so they are more than confident  that they have a long and happy business partnership ahead of them.

Here at Bohemian Hippy/Lotus Heart we were lucky enough to be among the first lot of official Tomillo customers in Spring 2018. We are always keen to try out new vegan places as it helps enormously when we are doing vegan advocacy if we know about new products available and new vegan places to eat around the UK. On our first visit we were unbelievably impressed by so many factors; the location, the interior, the atmosphere of the place, the outstanding service, the friendliness of the staff but to top it all is the truly mouth-watering food that is absolute plant-based heaven!

We were also very grateful when we were asked to be part of the Tomillo Vegan Burns Supper night – not only did we enjoy the best burns supper ever, but Tomillo invited us to do a talk about Lotus and allowed us to set up a table to sell some of our clothing & merchandise from  They also donated £114.00 which came from a percentage of all their ticket sales for the Burns event. On top of that we had Tom Holmes from offer his services to design our new logos for Lotus Heart – so all in all it was a very enjoyable and successful night for Lotus and the team.


It’s only a short walk from subway stations Cowcaddens or St Georges Cross – the subway is the easiest and quickest way to navigate your way around Glasgow city centre and west end with 15 stations to pick and choose from operating every few minutes from 06.30 in the morning to just before midnight.



Why not try compassion this Mothers Day and Easter instead of tradition and  go to Tomillo to celebrate in vegan style – if it’s good enough for Gaz Oakley
