Fossil fuels are always top of the list whenever the causes of climate change are discussed. Although they do make a large contribution to human-caused emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHG’s), it is now commonly known that the life and supply of domesticated animals raised for food have been greatly underestimated as a source of GHG’s, and actually count for at least HALF of all human-caused GHG’s.
The United Nations Food & Agriculture 2006 report Livestock’s Long Shadow estimated that 7,516 million metric tonnes per year of CO2 equivalents (CO2e), or 18% of annual worldwide GHG emissions are attributable to cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, camels, horses pigs, & poultry. Livestock and their by-products equate to more than 51% of worldwide GHG’s which is more than all transportation modes put together (transport being the movement of any people or goods by cars, trucks, ships, planes, and other vehicles).
Animal Agriculture – so much to answer for…
Animal agriculture is also responsible for around 90% of Amazon destruction, a heart-breaking and truly unbelievable figure of 70 billion farmed animals are reared annually worldwide for food and more than 6 million animals are killed for food every hour. We are simply breeding all these beings to bring them into a life of torture, violence, cruelty and ultimately murder all in the name of food and satisfying our greed and taste buds!
So clearly it is already known that raising animals for food is a leading cause of climate change and that moving toward a vegan diet is necessary to combat climate change’s worst effects. Animal agriculture severely affects the world’s freshwater supply, deforestation, loss of biodiversity and air and water pollution, among many other harmful effects. So if all this is known through research, why don’t the biggest percentage of people of our planet know about it?
People don’t know because the meat and dairy industries are as corrupt and devious as politics. Are people even aware these industries are heavily subsidised by our governments and so areas they have chosen to conceal they have been able to do so because they have the money, power and backing behind them to be able to do so, not to mention control over legislation and regulation? However, with the rise of the internet and social media people are able to educate themselves, converse with each other, dig for and then promote the truths they discover all over our world web web…the conspiracies and secrets are finally seeping out! The more we know they more we push for this global disgrace to be addressed.
Reduce Meat Consumption –
The Chinese government recently announced that they have outlined a plan to reduce its citizens’ meat consumption by a staggering 50%. This announcement has been welcomed by climate campaigners who hope this will provide a major shift in the effort to avoid runaway global warming.
Cowspiracy – The Sustainability Secret is now widely available due to its presence on streaming giant Netflix. Cowspiracy explores and examines how truly inconvenient this truth really is looking at everything from Al Gore’s 2006 documentary through to embarrassing facts about Greenpeace and other environmental organisations.

Richard Branson has talked openly about this subject on his Twitter feed, in blogs and on his company Twitters, and he has been urging people to reduce/give up beef because of its catastrophic effects on our planet!
Meat Free Athletes –
Even lifelong bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger is advocating eliminating or reducing meat and dairy from our diets, who has himself done so and is truly feeling the benefits.
Vegan bodybuilding/athletics has become very popular, and again is being hugely promoted via social media and the internet. It is now common knowledge that we do not need meat for muscles and that plants have all the protein we need!
Cleaner & Healthier –
Giving up meat and dairy isn’t just the right thing to do for the environment and obviously the animals; it’s a cleaner and healthier diet for our physical and mental health, but moreover a plant based diet would also help ease our global food crisis. Meat and dairy involve animals being fed and watered only to then kill them to feed humans, just think for one minute about the waste of food and water in that scenario. Millions of people die every year from starvation, and what we choose to eat in developed countries, has a huge global impact.
If you care about starving people, if you care about the addressing the problems with global warming, if you care about future generations, and if you care about yourself the only way you can truly care is to Go Vegan!
